Reimagining the Fram Museum: A Fusion of Technology, History, and Immersion
In 2017, we were honoured to collaborate with Sarner International on the ambitious reimagining of the Fram Museum in Oslo, Norway. This project sought to elevate the storytelling and visitor experience of this iconic museum, which houses the legendary Arctic exploration ship, The Fram, by seamlessly blending cutting-edge technology and immersive media.
Immersive Projection Design
At the core of the transformation was a state-of-the-art 240-degree projection system. Utilising 10 high-resolution projectors, we created a breathtaking visual environment that wraps around The Fram, immersing visitors in the awe-inspiring, often perilous landscapes of polar exploration. The projections don’t just tell a story—they transport visitors into it.
- An Antarctic Storm Comes Alive: This level of immersion was so impactful that some visitors, experiencing the ferocity of a simulated Antarctic storm, chose to sit down on newly installed benches on The Fram’s top deck. They felt as if they were riding the tumultuous seas themselves, clinging to the ship as it braved the storm. This emotional and physical response highlights the power of merging visual storytelling with spatial design.
Bringing The Fram to Life
Beyond the immersive visuals, we worked to enhance the ship’s interiors with lighting, projection mapping, and immersive audio. These elements created a multi-sensory journey that pulled visitors deeper into the ship’s legacy.
- Feeling the Engine’s Rumble: By carefully tuning low-frequency sounds, we recreated the powerful rumble of The Fram’s original diesel engine. Visitors could feel the vibrations reverberating through the ship, a visceral reminder of its mechanical might.
- Subtle Top Deck Details: On the top deck, leaning close to the old pipes revealed a faint yet persistent hum of the engine. These minute, carefully crafted details added layers of authenticity, giving visitors an experience that felt real and alive.
Our Role
The Blue Alchemy Labs team was instrumental in bringing this vision to life:
- Schematic and Detailed Design: We designed and integrated advanced technology and media systems, balancing innovation with historical preservation.
- Installation and Commissioning Oversight: We worked closely with onsite teams to ensure every element—from the projections to the audio systems—met the highest standards of quality and immersion.
Award-Winning Excellence
This project’s meticulous attention to detail and bold innovation earned it the prestigious Themed Entertainment Award for Outstanding Achievement in 2020. This recognition reflects the profound impact of immersive storytelling and the dedication of every team member involved.
The Fram Museum reimagining showcases how Blue Alchemy Labs crafts immersive, multi-sensory experiences that connect audiences with history on an emotional level. By combining technology, storytelling, and authentic detail, we create unforgettable, award-winning moments that stay with visitors long after they leave.
“The experience of being on board the FRAM has added an even more exciting element with the dramatic storm sequence, and the additional areas that have been opened up and ‘dressed’ on board. The design team have helped us add value and excitement to the visitors’ experience at the Museum for every visitor, young and old. These ambitious upgrades demonstrate the Museum’s continued commitment to renew the experience and maintain its status as one of Norway’s must-see attractions.” – Geir Kløver, Managing Director – The Fram Museum
