Mystic Timbers: A Thrilling Fusion of Coaster and Dark Ride
Mystic Timbers, a wooden roller coaster at Kings Island in Ohio, opened in 2017 and quickly became a fan favourite. Combining the classic thrills of a wooden coaster with an unexpected ‘dark ride’ finale, it offers a unique storytelling experience. Guests also enjoy a fully themed queue that immerses them in the attraction’s eerie narrative even before boarding.
The Dark Ride Element: “The Shed”
The ride’s finale, known as “The Shed,” adds an immersive layer of suspense and surprise. In this dimly-lit space, flickering overhead lamps, fluorescent lights, and scattered props like saws, vines, leaves, and a Coca-Cola vending machine create an abandoned, haunting atmosphere. As the train halts, an old cassette player begins to play 1980s music, only to be interrupted by a loud screeching sound. Projection screens reveal one of three random creatures, delivering a final scare before the train takes a sharp turn and returns to the station.
Our Contribution
Our team collaborated closely with Daniel’s Woodland, Holovis International, and Kings Island to bring Mystic Timbers to life, leading the Show Production team under the direction of Mike Ross. Key highlights of our involvement include:
- 1980s Research & Atmosphere: Mike Ross and the team conducted research with Kings Island to authentically capture the nostalgic feel of the 1980s, ensuring every detail—from the props to the audio—enhanced the theme.
- Projection, Audio, and SFX Design: Partnering with Holovis International, we utilised projection mapping, immersive audio systems, and dynamic special effects to deliver the thrills and scares that make “The Shed” unforgettable.
- Scenic Design: Collaborating with Daniel’s Woodland, we crafted immersive scenic elements that transformed the ride’s finale into a fully realised dark ride experience.
- Voice Acting: Adding a personal touch, you can hear Mike Ross’s voice as the security guard, featured throughout the queue and on the ride’s lift hill, enhancing the storytelling and building anticipation.
